  1. Northwest Florida Dirt Roads: Canopy Roads

Our nation's transportation infrastructure is characterized by an extensive network of paved Interstate roads and highways that crisscross the country; however, many rural areas are still serviced by an equally diverse network of unpaved roads, commonly referred to as dirt roads.  Many of these county roads have been in existence for over a hundred years and continue to provide reliable levels of service for home owners and businesses.  These roads also represent the historic thoroughfares traversed by pioneers and our forefathers to find “some place better.”  Visiting ghost towns and other historic sites often means traveling old dirt roads that were once key features of the transportation infrastructure.
This gallery provides examples of the beauty and diversity of canopy roads.  These unpaved roadways are bordered by forests with the adjacent treeline creating a partial to full canopy over the roadway.  While traveling between destinations along your normal route, take a diversion along a county-maintained, public, unpaved roadway for a different driving experience. Remember to drive slowly, wave to your fellow travelers, wonder at the remnants of those that chiseled-out lives in wild county, and take in the sights.  As stated by John Muir: "Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt."

This was a very old house me and my dad came across on the 4-lane road out further from town. Of course I said we had to stop and let me snap some photos of the place. :3
Also, I was very fond of this house as well as my images of this old place. So I really felt it a shame to let it get deleted one day by mistake and let it go to waste on my phone.

    • Nice stuff. There is a school out by my neck of the woods built in a similar fashion. I'd go take pictures of it but rumor has it there's a guy living in there who's a little on the unhinged side. I think a lot of the schools built out West in that era were based all on the same basic pattern.
    • give public restroom a whole nother meaning...
    • Talking of my interpretation of these pictographs and petroglyphs, I thought I was the geek but the rumors where I'm from says that the americans had multiple language families in 1492 something Indo-European speaker never had.  This collection you documented just reconfirms it for me.
    • That looks some kind of wagon to me. Or maybe a trailer. Probably used to haul the stuff came from the mining site.
That trail reminds me of our first trail trip with our '88 Wrangler YJ. Hoping to finish its restoration and install the Smittybilt SRC roof rack thing coming month.
    • lol I have a friend in Cheyenne when I visit him I'll have to visit here!

Oz found a great, apparently pristine site.  Hopefully he finds more and protects them.  Great job Oz.
