  1. I've been busy getting the Xterra ready for some off road trips this year. I think that I am about done for now. I have replaced the stock skids with some Skid Row 3/8 steel skids. I have also added some White Knuckle sliders, and an ARB rear diff cover. I have replaced the rear bumper with a Hefty Fab Works one with a tire carrier. Toyo Open Country II tires replaced the stock BFG's. I added a Garvin roof rack, Front Runner dual jerry can carrier and ARB awning. I have also installed a Cobra cb radio, and just because it looks cool painted the grille trim to match the body color. I may replace the front bumper with a winch one in the future, but for now it is ready for the trails. David

  4. It is a new year anyone planning any trips? I am planning a return this spring to Arizona and Utah. I have plans to take the Xterra on some of the trails around Sedona as well as Moab. Broken Arrow is on my to do list so any info on that would be appreciated. I also have my camping reservations for the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park. Does anyone have any suggestions for other trails in the Moab area? I am also planning for a late summer trip to Colorado to do Imogene and Black Bear Pass, so any info there would be appreciated as well.

  6. Some of the target tug planes were flown by female aviators known as WASP's. They trained just east of here in Sweetwater Texas. Currently there is a museum at the airport for them. Some of the male pilots took offence of women flying and several tug planes were actually shot at on purpose. Another type of target plane was actually shot at with frangable bullets and a light mounted on the target plane would flash when the plane was hit. We have many former training bases here in west Texas including several bombing sites. Some targets were in the shape of ships, all the oilfield activity has pretty much covered them up. I do know some people that have picked up alot of spent .50 cal rounds from them.

  8. Very cool. The reason why there are no fragments is that they did not use live bombs. They used sand filled casings, it saved on real bombs that were needed for combat as well as damage to the targets. I have seen A-10's flying in that area as well as F-16's so there must be an active range nearby.
  9. I ran the new tires down to Big Bend today. I did this because I was just down there a month ago and thought it would be a good comparison to the stock BFG Rugged Trails that I replaced. Now I have no complaints with the BFG's I just wanted a tire with better off road traction. The Toyo's are the Open Country AT2 in LT265/75/R16 load C. This is the same size as the stock tires just in LT rather than P metric. I decided on load C for a softer ride than an load E. On the highway the ride is firmer, not bad but noticeably firmer than stock. Noise is only slightly higher than stock, still not bad at all. Gas mileage seems about the same. I was getting 18 to 20 mpg depending if I was heading into or with the wind at 70 to 75 mph. That is about what I got with the stock tires. Off road I kept the tires at the street pressure of 35 psi. The tires gripped very well, better than stock. There was some mud this time and the tires handled it well. I never felt a loss of traction or the need to air down for a softer ride. All in all I think this tire is an excellent choice. It runs well on and off the road. Not quite as comfortable on road as the stocks were, but my off road confidence is much higher with this tire. I do recommend them.
  10. Ok I finally got some new tires. I went with Toyo Open Country AT2. The seem to be a good street as well as a off road tire. I ordered them from onlinetires.com , they have excellent prices. I hope to get them mounted up tomorrow and give them a run down to Big Bend Sunday. I will report back with pictures and comments on my choice. Thanks everyone for the input I really hate shopping for tires.
  11. Thanks all. I did not see any critters save for one roadrunner which came up to my camp and watched me set up the tent. He sat about three feet away the whole time. It was very quiet and peaceful. The night time sky is second to none. This is starting the busy season for the park, the lodge is booked well into next year. I recommend a visit to anyone who like solitude and desert views.
  12. Abandoned ranch. I don't have any history of this location. Lots of abandoned structures along road. I had a good trip. I need to get down there more often you just can't see it all in two days. I hope to get back down there again next month.

      South Pass City, approximately 90 miles north of Rock Springs, is a historic site administered by the state of Wyoming.  It consists of over 30 log, frame, and stone buildings, along with the Carissa Mine and Stamp Mill.

    • Surprise Canyon, California
      Recently, I’ve been going through my old VHS video tapes and digitizing them to DVDs.  These tapes contain my travels and explorations between 1995 and 2009.  I thought I’d start releasing some video shorts of my early travels on this forum.

      The back story for this particular video is as follows.  On March 30, 1996, I made a short hike of about a mile and a third up the lower third of Surprise Canyon, on the western slopes of the Panamint Range, Inyo County, California.  This canyon is just outside of Death Valley National Park.  This canyon has running water running year round through the stretch shown, fed by substantial Limekiln Springs, and the canyon is a water wonderland.  For those not familiar with the area, refer to the two maps.  The first one shows the canyon in relation to the region, the other a close up of the canyon and the ghost town of Panamint City.  The blue line in the close up image shows the route that was taken.

    • Exploration Field Trips - March 31-April 2, 2000 - Into the Nevada Triangle with Lew Shorb
      My next series of videos will be based on a trip in 2000 that I took with Lew Shorb.  Lew is a board member here, as well as owner of the popular website http://www.ghosttownexplorers.org/ghost.htm

      In breaking with my past habit of culling out historical sites and ghost towns and creating short videos dealing with these, I decided to keep the exploring part of Explore Forums in and create videos of each day of my travel and exploration, including our camps.  Scenery, travel, camping ghost towns and wide open spaces.

      Part one of this series, as well as subsequent videos, will all appear here within this same thread. Part I will start in my garage, where I was finishing up with the packing my truck.  The following day, after work, I begin my travels to meet Lew Shorb at Rhyolite, Nevada ghost town.

      Our three day, two night travels prowled about the "Nevada Triangle" section of northeastern Death Valley National Park; and will include such sites as:

      1. The Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad
      2. Gold Bar
      3. Phinney Mine
      4. Strozzi Ranch
      5. Currie Well (LV&T RR)
      6. Mud Springs Summit (LV&T RR)
      7. Happy Hooligan Mine

      What do you do with three authors, two 4x4’s, two two-way radios, three cameras, and camping supplies? Send them to Death Valley, of course. For three days in the first week of May, 2000, fellow authors and historical researchers Alan Patera, Alan Hensher and myself explored Death Valley north and south.

      Alan Patera writes and publishes the WESTERN PLACES series of monograph books.  Alan Hensher has been published in several periodicals as well as authoring several books, centering primarily on the history of Mojave Desert sites.

      Alan Patera, who hails from Oregon, came south to California and picked up Alan Hensher; then the two came my way. At the time I was living in Ridgecrest, California. After overnighting with my wife and I, the three of us took off for Death Valley.  Alan was busy researching and photographing for a future edition of WESTERN PLACES, this time centering on the camps of the Funeral Range, which forms the eastern border of east central Death Valley.  Circumstances and changes of our journey lead Alan to plant the seeds of two more future books, this time centering just outside the northernmost section of Death Valley.

      This is the trip that I consider to be my favorite trip I have ever undertaken.  It had been in the planning stages since the previous December.  Originally, quite a number of people were invited and had semi-committed themselves to come along.  Over time, however, eventually the number of people whose semi-commitments became firm commitments to this trip narrowed to four.  And I was one of them.
